PROGRAM: Show & Tell, plus Mini-Silent-Auction

REFRESHMENTS: Last names N through Z - Please Bring Goodies

Program Information:

Welcome back! Hope you had a great summer and collected lots of good rocks and fossils. Our program on September 18 is designed to let everyone show off their wonderful (or favorite) finds from the summer, and tell a story about how you found it. If the new rocks are pushing the old ones out of the house, please bring some oldies-but-goodies for the mini-silent-auction. The October Annual Show is fast approaching. At the June meeting and July work-party, we made lots of things for the Show -- especially for Children’s Day. We made Exit Gifts, Petoskey Stone Polishing Kits, Rock Critters, and Mineralogy Sample Kits. At the September meeting, please bring your stones for the Pebble Pond and sign up for duties at the Show.

Location & Time: The CMLMS September Meeting will be held at 7:30 pm at the North School, 333 E. Miller Rd, Lansing, MI. After a lot of searching and comparing costs and capacities, the Board decided this is still the best place. Please get there a little early to help set up for the Silent Auction!

Show News – A Message from CMLMS Show Chair, Roger Laylin

The CMLMS Annual Show is on October 24, 25, and 26. Here’s the Show Calendar:

Week of Sept 15 Work bee all week long at the Laylin's barn.

Sept.20th Work bee, 9:30 at Laylin's barn, Picnic at noon.

The Club Trailer will at the Laylin’s during the week of Sept.15th. As last year, we need to sort and repack the contents left from last year. If this can be accomplished during the week, we can have Sat. the 20th to decide what other stored material will be required for the show.

On Sat. 9/20, we will start about 9:30 am. There is much material sorted and boxed that needs to be priced and moved to the trailer. Please bring any materials you may wish to add to the children's table.

We will work until the job is completed, with a break for a picnic lunch. Bring a dish to pass. Drinks and table service will be provided. Please remember we need stones for the PEBBLE POND!

If we want to continue to have a show, more people are going to have to step up to do their share. Please plan to show up on Sept. 20th to give Showchair Roger and the club your support, if you cannot make it Sat, please talk to the Showchair and find another time to put in some support time. Help is also needed all during the week of the 15th. There are still lots of materials to go through at the Laylin's barn.

Way to GO Lila!! Lila Stevens, yet once again, has filled 500 egg carton Specimen Kits with minerals. Work Bee members helped by putting on the outside labels. Work Bee Members at the summer Picnic completed 200+ Petoskey Stone Polish Kits and many hundreds of Exit gifts for Children’s Day.

John Juroszek asked to be replaced as chairman of the Raffle this year. He has agreed to obtain the license, arrange for the tickets, and provide instructions for conducting the balance of the raffle, but wishes to be relieved of further responsibility.

I therefore ask for an enthusiastic Member to PLEASE step forward and Volunteer to take over this duty. I wish to thank John & Chris and Milt & Shar for their past efforts in making the raffle a success.

There will be sign-up sheets at the September and the October meetings for the different types of show work. Please come prepared to sign up!

If you can't make it to the meeting, but can help at the show, please call the chairperson of the work area that you want to sign up for. The chairpersons are as follows:

All these people put in many hours to make the show a success, so let’s plan on giving them lots of help. Involve your friends, especially on Friday, Children's Morning; we can offer them a free lunch and a free admission to the show. Last year Show Chair had 14 non-members helping; can you beat that number?

A reminder: The Show Committee will be enforcing the rule that in order to have free admission to the show a member must put in at least 2 hours at some show duty, enter a display, or demonstrate a lapidary skill. Remember that the club hospitality-break area is intended for use by the dealers and actively working club members.

Raffle Tickets are expected to be available at the September meeting. Please bring items that you wish to donate to be included in the raffle, or notify the NEW Chairperson(s) about your items -- or yours truly.

Roger Laylin, Show Chairman

A Message from CMLMS President Kris Wood

Hope to see you – and the rocks you collected this summer -- at the September meeting. It is time to make final preparations for the Show. Think about how you can get involved this year, and who you can bring or recruit to help; we always can use more help at the Show! Don’t forget to pick up some Show flyers to share and spread the word to everyone, as our Show covers so many interests.

See you soon, Kris

Field Trip Notes, Thanks to Jan Sjoquist

On Saturday, May 17, 2008, approximately 50 members from the Tulip City, Three Rivers, Central Michigan, Ft. Wayne, and Kalamazoo rock clubs participated in a field trip to the Lafarge Quarry in Paulding, Ohio. It was exciting to see so many families with children searching for and learning about fossils. For us, this was our first fossil trip and we learned from everyone - young and old.

The Lafarge Quarry is a large Devonian limestone quarry currently being used to make cement. The limestone appeared at a depth of about thirty-six feet. We were able to explore three new blast sites. The soft, oily shale at each of the sites yielded a variety of fossils. The fossils were plentiful and we were able to extract them with little effort. Brachiopods, favosites, and crinoids were abundant. Most people found parts of trilobites and some explorers found intact ones just sitting out in the piles of shale.

Doug and I brought back a rather large (and heavy) stone with a perfect 12" fan coral displayed on its side. We also brought back lots of fossils - none of which would be considered great finds to anyone except a "newby." The field trip was a blast (no pun intended)!!
